Doctors tested the procedure on 18 stroke patients who had reached the plateau stage of their physical therapy. This means that there was no further possibility for any more recovery.
Surgeons then drilled a hole into the patients’ heads, and injected them with adult stem cells. The cells then “triggered” areas of the brain that had been damaged, and they ultimately were able to repair themselves.
Within just a few days, patients were able to move their limbs. Some even regained the ability to speak.
The results of this trial give hope that stem cells will eventually be able to be a go-to method for healing patients with brain trauma and even other injuries.
