The group was cruising on her friend’s superyacht when they decided to feed some Tawny nurse sharks which were swimming by the vessel. Melissa was the last of her friends to attempt the feeding when it suddenly went horribly wrong. Instead of leaving the fish in front of her and letting the shark slurp it up, she kept the fish in her hand while the shark swam up, grabbed the fish and Melissa!
Melissa’s encounter was caught on video by one of her friends and to say it was a scary moment would be the understatement of the year. It’s obvious that she was pulled in on accident, as she didn’t properly feed the shark and she later recalled that the shark didn’t even realize what had happened either.
Talking to Perth News, Melissa revealed the following details:
“I think the shark was in shock as much as I was … the only way I can describe it is this immense pressure and it felt like it was shredding it off the bone. I came up and I was like, ‘I’ve lost my finger, my finger’s gone.’”
Luckily, it wasn’t gone but it was badly bitten. She also explained to Perth News that she wants people to know that it was by no means the shark’s fault and her failure to follow the instructions is what caused the situation.
