It got its start in the Philadelphia area around 1967. By 1968, it was a nationwide craze. Every kid knew the jingle, priding themselves on being able to recite the ingredient list by heart. McDonalds has even messed with its signature Big Mac as of late. They’ve released both a larger and smaller version to go with its two-all-beef-patties-special-sauce-lettuce-cheese-pickles-onions-on-a-sesame-seed-bun original.

It’s become such a pop culture stalwart that there’s a museum dedicated to it in North Huntington, PA. It opened its doors to mark the menu item’s 40th anniversary. There was even a character named after the food stuff – Officer Big Mac – who lived alongside Mayor McCheese, the Grimace, and the Hamburglar in the fictional world of McDonaldland.
And They’ve Messed With It Before
But now – BIG NEWS out of Kroc town. The Big Mac is getting yet another make-over, and this time, there’s nary a cow in sight. That’s right, the Golden Arches is introducing a chicken version of the sandwich, and it sounds delicious. Now, this isn’t the first time the meat in a Mac has been messed with. In India, lamb is the protein of choice, and they’ve also tried a vegetarian option.
