Last week, we shared the story of IncrediblyShinyShart – a Redditor who posted that he served foot tacos to his friends two years ago. If you missed it, Shiny had his foot amputated after an accident and asked the hospital if he could take it home. After extensive paperwork, Shiny’s unattached foot was released to him and he planned on having it taxidermied or freeze-dried. What he ultimately decided to do was invite 11 friends over to his place for a brunch where foot tacos would be served. Understandably, one buddy turned down the invitation but the other 10 showed up.
You may be thinking that cannibalism is illegal so how did he get away with it? But it turns out that eating human meat isn’t against the law anywhere but Utah. Laws against murder, buying and selling human meat, and corpse desecration “makes cannibalism difficult but technically legal in the other 49 states.” The kicker to Shiny’s story is not only was serving his friends his own foot legal it was actually ethical since he was forthcoming about what kind of meat his friends would be consuming and he documented the entire process.
Sadly, not all cannibalism is on the up and up. There have been many cases throughout history of people eating human meat without any knowledge or consent. Here are nine of those times…
1. Joe Metheny’s Customers
In the late 90s, Baltimore serial killer Joe Metheny served up his victim’s meat in a roadside BBQ stand. In a jailhouse confession, Methey wrote: “I had real roast beef and pork sandwiches and why not they were very good. The human body tastes was very similar to pork. If you mix it together no one can tell the difference.” He added: “So the next time you’re riding down the road and you happen to see an open pit beef stand that you’ve never seen before, make sure you think about this story before you take a bite of that sandwich. Sometimes you never know who you may be eating. Ha! Ha!”
2. Residents Of Quetta, Pakistan
The European Parliament published a report in 2014 detailing human meat was being served at several restaurants in Quetta, Pakistan. Customers began to realize that something was amiss when they could barely chew the meat and it smelled bad. Apparently, the owner of the restaurants received the human bodies from an unknown supplier.
3. Customers At A Chinese Market
From 1979-1997, Zhang Yongming served time in China for murder. After he was released, he continued his murderous ways and was convicted of killing 11 males between 2008 and 2012. After he murdered them, he sold their flesh to a Chinese market, claiming it was ostrich meat.
