Fortunately, though, Biplab Hazra, the photographer who captured the image hopes that it will spread awareness to the fact that awful things like this happen. Hazra says, “India is the world’s stronghold for the Asian elephant, home to over 70 per cent of the global population of the species. 

“But this achievement rings hollow as vital elephant habitats and routes continue to be ravaged, and human-elephant conflict escalates to a fatal degree.

“For these smart, gentle, social animals who have roamed the sub-continent for centuries, hell is now and here.”

With what we know about elephants’ ability to feel and express, it is especially sad to see these animals treated so poorly.
