Bill Gates and his wife Melinda aren’t just worried about Microsoft’s earnings this quarter or when the next breakthrough in technology will be, they’re concerned about humankind, too. The couple founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 and are reported to be the largest private foundation in the United States, holding assets worth $38 billion.
Based in the Gates’ hometown of Seattle, the “primary aims of the foundation are, globally, to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty, and in America, to expand educational opportunities and access to information technology.”
Not just one of the world’s richest and most powerful men, Bill is also widely regarded as one of the most philanthropic humanitarians on the planet.
The Gates’ also dabble in the oracle field as well. Not the software company, the psychic one.
Gates has long warned of the impending diseases that threaten the existence of human beings but his wife Melinda is also getting in on the crystal ball act, telling Vox founder Ezra Klein at SXSW that a “bioterrorism attack” is very possible in the next decade.
“A bioterrorist event could spread so quickly, and we are so unprepared for it,” Melinda said. “Think of the number of people who leave New York City every day and go all over the world – we’re an interconnected world.”
Melinda added the thought of things to come scare her so much that she doesn’t even like talking about it, despite the fact she and Bill have been talking about it for years.
